in a Fallbrook Quonset hut stood San Diego County’s first craft brewery. It gathered much attention from craft beer enthusiasts so much so, in fact, that the small brewery that operated it couldn’t brew beer fast enough to sate demand and eventually went out of business. That short-lived but important footnote in the history of San Diego beer went by the name Bolt Brewery.
Clint Stromberg was a part of Bolt back in the day and has many fond memories of the operation, the beer, and the buzz about craft brew. Rather than allow that ahead-of-its-time operation to fade into the annals of local lore, he has started anew with business partner Molly Rust to reopen the business in East County. Version 2.0 of Bolt Brewery is located in “the Jewel of the Hills” at 8179 Center Street, just southwest of Grossmont Center. Bolt Brewery has again blazed trails, becoming the first brewery to open in La Mesa thanks to a recent change in the City charter to allow for beer producers to set up shop. Again in a Quonset hut, Bolt features a large festive beer garden with outside seating, food vendors and on the weekend you can catch a great band to enjoy while you try the wide selection of beer.
Bolt has also opened a second location in Little Italy. One of the fastest expansions in craft beer history, Bolt is finding its place in the forever growing Craft Beer community. You can visit the Little Italy location at 1971 India Street.
Stromberg along with his team of brewers Chris Angel (Head Brewer), Josh Ferracioli and Nick Pankow are steadily brewing at Bolt. Operating at 10-barrel system Clint built in 1995 in Budapest, Hungary, Bolt will produce roughly 2,000 barrels of beer annually. Though Clint considers himself a session beer specialist, the veteran of more than 29 years hopes to craft a little bit of everything — ales and lagers ranging from a proper pilsner to pale ales and stouts.
Bolt currently has 25 beers rotating thru their 20 taps at each location. Something for everyone.
